MyMicroGallery is pleased to announce “The Poetic Song of Typography,” a solo exhibition by Gaia Di Blasio featuring “tamperings” (manomissioni) on photographs by Paolo Monina. The exhibition consists of forty graphic works (in limited editions ranging from fifteen to forty copies). Gaia Di Blasio’s poetic-visual universe is made of letters, words, and images that meet and share a common space. The image becomes a graphic counterpoint, almost like a musical score, where the solids (sound) and voids (pauses) define the entire pace and development of the composition. For this project, the artist collaborated with photographer Paolo Monina, “tampering” with his photos by tearing them and overlaying them with quotes and typographic characters.
The elements used to create the works include dissimilar typefaces of varying sizes—predominantly black or red—with different opacities, blurred effects, and free positioning in both uppercase and lowercase. These are combined with reinterpreted quotes from Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo, and others; newspaper collages; and fragments of personal photos and those by Paolo Monina, featuring men, women, fashion items, or flowers as subjects.
The objective is to create an abstract “dialogue” between these elements, integrating and overlapping them, partially or entirely, in a harmonious and dynamic way. There are continuous contaminations and interactions between words and images. In some works, the images acquire a freer rhythm dictated by emotions, set among punctuation marks, letters, and words; in others, the iconic and verbal signs explicitly reference product advertisements and magazine covers from the 1960s.
