Irene Grönwall: Under the Skin

MyMicroGallery is pleased to announce “Under the Skin” the first solo exhibition in Italy of the Swedish artist Irene Grönwall.

Irene Grönwall’s works express a complex world with simple ways, sometimes they are pure calligraphy, or rather: pure handwriting, because the signs often do not worry to be beautiful, but to express energy and moods, a path, a lost innocence of the sign that tries to rediscover its origins in constant dialogue with color, which refers to new dimensions.

The predecessors of Irene Grönwall are undoubtedly the abstract American expressionists, Kline, Motherwell, Frankenthaler. The artist then developed a long research finding an expressive identity. Everything starts from giving voice to the invisible, to emotions and motions of the soul, going beyond the forms. But what are “forms”? In sensory reality it is the form of everything that has an outline, with which an object or an organism differs from the surrounding reality, and in which its visual and tactile characteristics are defined. All art is built by the organization of forms in an infinite dialectic of death and rebirth, of construction and destruction. Irene Grönwall’s painting is all about revealing an inner world understood as an experience of the profound. There is always an element, a breath, a trace, which implements a transformation to tell the truth of painting. So that space is inhabited, even when we seem to see emptiness, even when no one is seen.

Irene Grönwall was born in Stockholm. Her father was a painter, and grew up in the midst of paint and turpentine. She was trained as an actress and during her theatrical career she always drew and painted. Painting is a process as life is a process and she is interested in what lays underneath, both as a painter and as an actor. What do we show and what do we hide? Her paintings are a search for moods. It is a painting made up of layers on layers, where matter is added and subtracted. The intention is to put the viewer in a position to feel and use their emotions. The color alternates works in which the movement and the formal rhythm of the sign are placed at the center of the investigation.
